Collection: Bernard Buffet

A representative painter of France after the Second World War. His sad landscapes and figures matched the postwar atmosphere, making him a popular artist from his student days. He established his own style of painting, with stiff, somewhat outlined lines, simplified forms, and monotone colors, competing with the great masters of the French art world, along with his contemporaries Michel Henry, Brasilier, Cathelin, Janssen, and Cassignol.

 

Born in Paris in 1928

In 1943 , he entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied in the same year with Michel Henry and Brasilier.

1937 : First solo exhibition held; works purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in Paris

1949 : Winner of the Critec Award

1959 : The Bernard Buffet Exhibition was held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto.

1971 : Awarded the Legion of Honor

1973 Buffet Museum opened in Shizuoka

In 1974 , the work was purchased by the Vatican Museums.

1991 Retrospective at the Pushkin Museum and the Hermitage Museum

1999 : Committed suicide at his home in the south of France
