A representative painter of post-World War II France. His melancholic landscapes and figures matched the post-war atmosphere, making him a popular artist even during his student days. Alongside his contemporaries Michel Henry, Brasilier, Catlin, Jansem, and Cassignol, he established a unique artistic style with a hard, slightly outlined, and simplified monochromatic form, challenging the masters of the French art world.

1943 Entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with Michel Henry and Brasilier in the same year
1937 Held his first solo exhibition; Musée National d'Art Moderne acquired his work
1949 Awarded the Critque Prize
1959 "Bernard Buffet Exhibition" held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto
1971 Awarded the Légion d'honneur
1973 Buffet Museum opened in Shizuoka
1974 The Vatican Museums acquired his work
1991 Pushkin Museum and Hermitage Museum held a retrospective exhibition
1999 Committed suicide at his home in Southern France
