A prominent painter of post-World War II France. His melancholic landscapes and figures resonated with the post-war atmosphere, and he became a popular artist even as a student. Alongside contemporaries Michel Henry, Brasilier, Catlin, Jansem, and Cassignoul, he established his unique artistic style characterized by a hard, somewhat outlined, and simplified form with monochromatic colors, standing out among the masters of the French art world.

1943 Enrolled in the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with Michel Henry and Brasilier in the same class
1937 Held first solo exhibition; Museum of Modern Art in Paris purchased his work
1949 Awarded the Critic's Prize
1959 "Bernard Buffet Exhibition" held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto
1971 Awarded the Légion d'honneur
1973 Buffet Museum opened in Shizuoka
1974 Vatican Museums purchased his work
1991 Pushkin Museum and Hermitage Museum held a retrospective exhibition
1999 Committed suicide at his home in southern France
