A representative painter of post-World War II France. His melancholic landscapes and figures resonated with the post-war atmosphere, making him a popular artist even during his student days. Alongside contemporaries such as Michel Henri, Brasilier, Catlin, Jansen, and Cassignol, he established a unique painting style characterized by hard, somewhat outlined and simplified forms and monochromatic colors, challenging the masters of the French art world.

1943 Enters the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with Michel Henry and Brasilier in the same class
1937 Holds his first solo exhibition; the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris acquires his work
1949 Awarded the Critics' Prize
1959 "Bernard Buffet Exhibition" held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto
1971 Awarded the Légion d'honneur
1973 Buffet Museum established in Shizuoka
1974 Vatican Papal Art Collection acquires his work
1991 Pushkin Museum and Hermitage Museum hold a retrospective exhibition
1999 Commits suicide at his home in Southern France
