Collection: Henri Matisse

He painted bright and elegant paintings with simplified flat colors, surfaces and lines. He aimed to create a relaxing space, not an expressive art. He was a very French painter who aimed to create an interior like the musical artist Erik Satie.

Born in 1869 in Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France.

1887: Studied law in Paris, passed the bar exam and started working at a law firm

Later, he aspired to become a painter.

1991: Studied at the Academie Julian, an art school in Paris.

He was known as a Fauvist painter along with Vlaminck and Derain because of his bold use of color at first. Later, he began to show a tendency towards geometric patterns and abstraction of objects, and his use of lines and flat colors became more refined. He also worked on paintings, prints, paper cuttings, stained glass, and church interiors.

1917-present: Artistic activities in Nice

Died in Nice in 1954

His works are in the collections of famous museums around the world, including the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris (Pompidou Center), the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
