He painted bright and graceful pictures with simplified flat colors, planes, and lines. He was a very French painter who aimed not for expressive art, but for comforting interiors. Born in Northern France in 1869. In 1991, he studied at the Académie Julian, an art school in Paris. Initially, he painted with bold colors, which led him to be called a Fauvist painter along with Vlaminck and Derain. Later, he tended toward geometric patterns and the abstraction of objects, and his lines and flat colors became simplified. Paintings, prints, cut-outs, stained glass, church interiors. Died in Nice in 1954. His works are housed in world-renowned museums such as the Centre Pompidou (National Museum of Modern Art, Paris) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
