He painted bright and graceful pictures with simplified flat colors, planes, and lines. He was a quintessential French painter who aimed not for expressive art, but for peaceful interiors. Born in Northern France in 1869. In 1991, he studied at the Académie Julian, an art school in Paris. Initially, he painted with bold colors, earning him the title of a Fauvist painter along with Vlaminck and Derain. Later, he showed a tendency toward geometric patterns and the abstraction of objects, and his lines and flat colors became simplified. He created paintings, prints, paper cut-outs, stained glass, and church interiors. He died in Nice in 1954. His works are housed in famous museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
