He painted bright and elegant pictures with simplified flat colors, planes, and lines. He was an extremely French painter who aimed for his art to be a comforting interior rather than a form of expression. Born in northern France in 1869. In 1991, he studied at the Académie Julian, an art school in Paris. Initially, he painted with bold colors, earning him the title of Fauvist painter alongside Vlaminck and Derain. Later, he developed a tendency toward geometric patterns and the abstraction of objects, simplifying lines and flat colors. He worked in painting, printmaking, paper cutting, stained glass, and church interiors. He died in Nice in 1954. His works are housed in famous museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
