A representative painter of post-World War II France. His melancholic landscapes and figures resonated with the post-war atmosphere, and he became a popular artist even as a student. Alongside Michel Henry, Brazillier, Cathelin, Jansem, and Cassigneul, his contemporaries, he established a unique artistic style with a hard, somewhat outlined and simplified form, and a monochrome palette, challenging the masters of the French art scene.

Born in Paris in 1928.

1943 Enrolled in the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with Michel Henry and Brazillier in the same class.

1959 "Bernard Buffet Exhibition" held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and Kyoto.

1971 Awarded the Legion of Honor.

1973 Buffet Museum opened in Shizuoka.

1974 Vatican City State Museum purchased his work.
