Raymond Peynet

Raymond Peynet was a master of poetic illustration, one of France's leading artists of the 20th century, beloved both in France and abroad. To this day, his popularity transcends generations, with Peynet Museums in Antibes, France and Karuizawa, Japan, and monuments installed in various locations.

He gained fame by publishing illustrations in French and British magazines and worked across a wide range of fields, including illustrations for literary works, stage, ballet, and exhibition decorations. In 1942, inspired by an outdoor bandstand in Valence, France, he created the image of "The Lovers," which, upon its publication in a magazine, garnered a huge response and achieved global popularity as his representative "The Lovers" series.

Subsequently, through diverse developments such as Peynet dolls by a French toy manufacturer and ceramics and dinnerware by Rosenthal in Germany, he became widely popular with the public and maintains high popularity even today. He also produced numerous artworks such as drawings, paintings, and prints, and in Japan, Galerie Adekat introduces and sells his original prints.

It is also known that Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco was an avid collector, reportedly collecting Peynet's doll series. Furthermore, when Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne of the British Royal Family visited Paris, it is said that Peynet dolls, which were popular at the time, were used as symbolic gifts for the 20 arrondissements of Paris. These anecdotes illustrate how Peynet's "The Lovers" were widely cherished as a symbol of French culture.

Moreover, Peynet, alongside contemporaries like Roy Lichtenstein, is undergoing re-evaluation as illustration and comic expression expand into the realm of art. His poetic and universal imagery is again attracting attention as anticipating sensitivities that resonate with today's contemporary art.

 

1: Biography

1908 Born in Paris.

1922 Graduated from École des Arts Appliqués in Paris. Aspires to a career in advertising design.

1930 Married Denise Damour (her surname Damour means "love" in French). They were a close couple, and their marital love directly influenced the world of lovers Peynet depicted.

1936 Published drawings in the French English newspaper "The Boulevardier."

1942 While observing an outdoor bandstand (kiosk) in Valence, France, he was inspired to draw "Peynet's Lovers," and the series began serialization in the magazine Ric et Rac.

There is the Raymond Peynet and Humorous Painters Museum in Antibes, France; the Peynet Museum in Brassac, France; the Peynet Museum in Karuizawa, Japan; Peynet's Park of Love and Memorial in Saint-Valentin, France; the Raymond Peynet Memorial Park (Valentine Park) and Sakuto Museum in Mimasaka, Japan; and a statue of Peynet's Lovers is displayed as a monument of love and peace in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

In Antibes, on the French Riviera, there is the Raymond Peynet and Humorous Painters Museum. This museum, along with the adjacent Picasso Museum, is owned and operated by the city of Antibes, making it an important cultural and tourist asset for the city. Antibes, along with Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and Nice, forms a significant part of the luxury resort area stretching from the French Riviera to the Italian Riviera. The Côte d'Azur is home to many artists and several famous museums. Nice has museums dedicated to Chagall, Matisse, and Dufy, while Cannes, though without a museum, hosts the renowned Cannes International Film Festival annually and many other international events. In Antibes, the Peynet and Humorous Painters Museum and the Picasso Museum are located next to the yacht harbor, attracting many tourists. According to the museum director in 2019, due to the existence of a Peynet Museum in Japan, the proportion of Japanese visitors to the Peynet and Humorous Painters Museum in Antibes was relatively high, but recently, with Peynet dolls being manufactured and sold in China and Peynet's popularity growing there, the number of Chinese visitors has increased.

I, Yasuhiro Takeda of Galerie Adekat, was commissioned by the Karuizawa Peynet Museum to serve as a cultural exchange envoy between the Karuizawa Peynet Museum and the Raymond Peynet and Humorous Painters Museum in Antibes several times in the 2010s, where I exchanged views with the museum director and Peynet's daughter, Annie Peynet.

 

 

2: Karuizawa Peynet Museum　　　　　　　　　　　　　

 In Japan, there are Peynet museums in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, and Mimasaka, Okayama Prefecture. The Karuizawa Peynet Museum is located within a cultural theme park called Taliesin. Taliesin comprises the Peynet Museum, the Karuizawa Kogen Bunko (archives), the Tomiko Asabuki Hall, the English Garden, villas of famous pre-war writers (Takeo Arishima, Michizo Tachihara, Tatsuo Hori, Yaeko Nogami), and the Koko Fukasawa Flower Museum. Every summer, flower artist Shogo Kariyazaki holds events in the English Garden. The Peynet Museum occupies a "summer house" built in its current location by Antonin Raymond, a famous Czech architect who came to Japan with American architect Frank Lloyd Wright (one of the "Big Three" architects of the world) and was involved in the construction of the Imperial Hotel and Tokyo Woman's Christian University. The Peynet Museum is also a tourist attraction in Karuizawa, a luxury resort area in Japan.

From 1995 to 2015, Galerie Adekat operated a gallery of French paintings and prints called "Galerie Vent de France" at Karuizawa Prince Hotel and its affiliated facilities for 20 years. I planned and implemented various events for Karuizawa in collaboration with Prince Hotel and the town of Karuizawa. Because I was the world's foremost collector of Raymond Peynet's prints, spoke fluent French, and traveled frequently to France, the Peynet Museum entrusted me with the mission of facilitating exchange with the Peynet Museum in Antibes.

3: Raymond Peynet's theme park, Valentine Park, in Mimasaka City, Okayama Prefecture

In 1988, Sakuto Town (now Mimasaka City) formed a sister city relationship with the city of Saint-Valentin, France, and in 1998, Sakuto Valentine Park, a multi-purpose park themed on "love," was completed. In the center of the park, a statue of Raymond Peynet's lovers is installed, and the fountain is named "Spring of Love." The Sakuto Museum within the park houses over 150 works by Raymond Peynet, and a wedding hall inspired by Peynet's lovers, as well as the Valentine Hotel, are also located within the park. It has been designated a sacred place for lovers.

4: Peynet Museum in Brassac, France

     There is also a Peynet Museum in Brassac-les-Mines, Raymond Peynet's mother's hometown. Raymond Peynet himself stayed there in his childhood, and during World War II, he evacuated to this place with his wife and daughter. In 1942, Peynet visited Valence and was inspired by the kiosk there to paint the lovers, but he was living in Brassac during that time of evacuation.

 5: Park of Love and Peynet Memorial in Saint-Valentin, France

The city of Saint-Valentin, France, is a sacred place for lovers due to its name. In Japan, February 14th is Valentine's Day, a day for women to express their feelings to men, but it is also a day of "love" in Europe. The origin of Valentine's Day comes from the Christian cleric "Saint Valentinus." While there have been many clerics named Valentinus throughout history, the name is said to have originated from Father Valentinus of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. Below is an anecdote about his love for lovers: In the 3rd century Roman Empire, Emperor Claudius prohibited soldiers from marrying to maintain their valor. Father Valentinus, defying the emperor's orders, sheltered and married young men and women. When the emperor discovered this, Father Valentinus was executed on February 14th. He became a historical figure as a saint who risked his life to protect the love of young people. From this episode, Saint Valentinus is revered as the "guardian deity of love." February 14th, the day he died, became "Love Day." The city of Saint-Valentin, France, became a sacred place for lovers, and there is a memorial hall for Raymond Peynet, who depicted the love of lovers, and a kiosk (outdoor bandstand), a symbol of Peynet's lovers, is also installed in the "Park of Love." It has a sister city relationship with Mimasaka City, where the Japanese love theme park "Valentine Park Sakuto" is located. Valentine's Day on February 14th is a day of "love" not only in France and Japan but all over the world.

6: Raymond Peynet's "Monument of Love and Peace" in Hiroshima Peace Park

In 1989, the Sea and Islands Exposition was held in Hiroshima, and Raymond Peynet's supervised statue of lovers, "Monument of Love and Peace," was installed at the venue. After the exposition, Hiroshima City purchased it and installed it in Hiroshima Peace Park as a symbol of love and peace. Even today, Peynet's "Monument of Love and Peace" in Hiroshima Peace Park, where the Atomic Bomb Dome is located, continues to convey a message of love and peace to people all over the world.

 7: Peynet's Bandstand in Valence

When Raymond Peynet visited Valence in 1942, he saw the Kiosque de musique in the park and was inspired to draw a musician playing the violin and his lover. That was the moment Peynet's lovers were born.

3: Raymond Peynet's Paintings, Drawings, Original Lithographs, and Etchings

Peynet was an illustrator, so he published illustrations in newspapers and such, but not many of his original paintings remain. He didn't have the idea of selling original paintings, so they were given away or scattered. Original lithographs were published twice. The first time was in 1985 when Mr. Muret, the president of a printmaking company in Nice, published about 35 original lithographs simultaneously. This was the year the French government issued Peynet's commemorative stamps, and Raymond Peynet's original lithographs were produced and released at the same time as the commemorative stamps. In 1978, Mr. Muret produced "The Twelve Zodiac Signs" series in etching. All of these works are original works with Raymond Peynet's signature and limited edition numbers. Then, in the 1990s, Mr. Agostini, the son of the painter Tony Agostini, produced and released about 10 original lithographs.

Seven years after Peynet's prints were released, in 1992, Mr. Muret, the publisher of Raymond Peynet's original lithographs and etchings, passed away. Through my junior colleague, Alexander Tokar, Mr. Muret's nephew, Galerie Adekat purchased a total of 5,000 original lithographs and etchings by Raymond Peynet that remained in the warehouse, about 10,000 pieces. The Raymond Peynet original lithographs and etchings sold by Galerie Adekat were purchased directly from Mrs. Muret, the original publisher, and Mr. Alexandre Tokar of Édition des Cercles at that time.

Peynet's Lovers Series

1: "The Musician of the Alcove"

Commentary: In 1942, Raymond Peynet, inspired by an outdoor bandstand (kiosk) in Valence, France, created his first illustration of "Peynet's Lovers," which was published in the magazine "Ric et Rac." Since then, Peynet continued to draw lovers. The painting of lovers playing the violin in the outdoor bandstand can be considered the origin of Peynet's paintings. In the kiosk, a woman knits while her musician partner plays the violin; her knitting forms a musical score. A dove helps by holding a ball of yarn. 2: "Mozart's Concert"

Commentary: The program for the concert at the Académie de Musique is written as Mozart's "The Magic Flute." National music academies were established in many European countries, contributing to the promotion of music. While the French music academy is now the Paris Opera, here it is the music academy of Raymond Peynet's fairytale world. Mozart stayed in Paris twice, had an audience with the king, and composed and performed the "Paris Symphony." His mother also died in Paris, so the French feel a kinship with Mozart. The French musical preference leans towards Mozart's ornamental and sophisticated music rather than the grander music of Beethoven. "The Magic Flute" is an opera where a prince rescues a princess and they are united, which perfectly fits the image of the lovers in this painting. The fact that the program is the opera "The Magic Flute" and the venue is the Paris Music Academy is also interesting, as it subtly aligns with historical facts. 3: "Basket of Birds"

Commentary: Peynet's lovers face each other in a field. The man feeds a bird that has settled on the woman's chest. The woman appears simple and modest. Her basket holds flowers picked from the ground, which she presumably came to gather. The color palette consists of transparent blue sky, green (a mix of blue and yellow), and pink (a mix of blue and red), all closely related hues, creating a stable and gentle color harmony. The lighter brown clothing adds a calm feeling. In the distance, a castle-like building is depicted, but it's not a castle; it's a cluster of small houses, where common people live. Does the bird on her chest want to fly with her to a more glamorous world? Yet, the bird seems happy to peck at what the not-so-wealthy man offers. With a gentle man, a simple life, serene nature, and peaceful daily routine, love is added. Raymond Peynet's loving gaze can be felt. Commentary: A thrush continuously circles the man, and primroses have taken over everywhere. Spring has arrived, but she hasn't, and the man continues to wait for her. While waiting for a long time, vines entwined around his body and the chair. The harsh winter is over, and spring has arrived. His long wait has paid off, and she has finally come, riding a bird, with her hair fluttering in the spring breeze, on a large bird. He still doesn't know of her arrival. Where did she come from? Did she secretly slip away from a castle on a hill? The green of early spring is fresh. It will become a deeper, burning green towards early summer. 5: "Summer Boating"

Commentary: Raymond Peynet's lovers seem to be in Venice. The woman whispers, "There's no other couple in the world as in love as us!" The man replies, "No, there's one more. Look in the water!" Their embracing figures were reflected on the water's surface. Beyond the water gate, the famous tower of St. George's Church in Venice can be seen. Europeans, moved by the beauty of Venice, have been saying "See Venice and die" since ancient times. Thomas Mann, a German novelist active in the first half of the 20th century, titled his novel "Death in Venice," which depicted the composer Gustav Mahler's encounter with a beautiful boy in Venice in the late 19th to early 20th century. Birds, squirrels, grasses, and trees watch over them. The modest house above the water gate suits them perfectly. Against the backdrop of Venice, the most beautiful aquatic city in the world, the most loving couple in the world confirm their love and are intoxicated by it on the Venetian sea.  6: "Autumn Violin"

Commentary: Raymond Peynet's lovers sit on a gigantic dove, reading poetry and weeping. The poem they are reading is Paul Verlaine's "Autumn" by the 19th-century Symbolist poet. The poem describes a mournful feeling upon hearing the sound of a violin on an autumn day, which becomes even more sentimental when combined with the ringing of church bells. It recalls happy days gone by, leading to tears. The trees in the background are shedding their last autumn leaves. Angels who have descended on those trees play violins, giving melody to Verlaine's delicate poetry. The melancholy autumn, Verlaine's poem, the sound of the violin, the passing season, and memories stir the heart. Even the dove on the lovers' bench is tearful.  Commentary: Let's listen to the conversation of Raymond Peynet's lovers. Woman: "I want to hug you forever." Man: "Why don't you give me your flu? And I'll give you my bronchitis, so we can take the same medicine!" This is Place Philstainbert, behind the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris. There's a bench in a small space within the bustling district. In summer, it's a popular gathering spot, but now it's covered in snow, and it continues to snow. Night falls, and the streetlights cast faint light on the white snow. People hurry home. Neither the darkness of the night nor the coldness of the snow can separate the lovers. 8: "Cocktail of Love"

Commentary: Peynet's lovers meet in the forest. In an early summer forest, the man has opened an outdoor bar. The male bartender prepares cocktails, and angels and birds deliver drinks. The charming female customer, wearing a hat made of wild flowers, orders a "cocktail with a base of morning dew, a hint of lily of the valley, and a mix of May sunshine and your kindness." On the counter, a squirrel has just finished drinking a cocktail. An angel waiter is about to fly off to deliver an order to a customer in the forest. An unidentified bird is vigorously pulling on the hem of the female customer's pink dress, but its intention is unclear. Above the bartender's head, two doves embrace. On both sides of the canvas, a pair of Peynet trees (trees with branches and leaves that frequently appear in Peynet's paintings) are depicted. On the ground, fragrant lilies of the valley sing and dance towards the sky. Feeling the gentle, beautiful May breeze all over their bodies, they breathe in the fresh forest air, stretching their arms towards the sky and the sunlight. From late April to early May, florists in Paris simultaneously line their shopfronts with lilies of the valley.  9: "Their Mansion"

Commentary: Peynet's lovers embrace in a small house at the foot of a hill. It's a tiny house where you can't even stand up unless you open the window in the roof. Around the house is a small garden enclosed by a low fence. The garden is home to cats, small birds, butterflies, snails, and even an upside-down turtle. Low plants are also planted. On top of the hill, a large palace soars. Inside that palace, gorgeously dressed people are probably living a lavish life. Now, let's listen to the lovers' conversation. Woman: "It's so good we found a wonderful house. It has a garden and you can see the sky." Poet: "When two people live together, it feels more magnificent than a palace." A peaceful and tranquil life, surrounded by nature and small animals, filled with love and trust – what a rich and magnificent life it is. 10: "The Little Prince"

Commentary: Raymond Peynet's lovers seem to meet even in their dreams. The man who is late for their appointed time says, "Sorry I couldn't make it to dream time, the Milky Way was jammed." While the Little Prince in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's picture book is a boy, Peynet's Little Prince appears to be a lover. Where did he come from? Which galaxy, which star, is her star in? Could it be Earth? Apparently, there are about 200,000 habitable planets in the universe. Earth is one in 200,000. Do the residents of the dream world also come from other stars? Beyond her bed, many spires and dome roofs are visible. Buildings like the Leaning Tower of Pisa are also seen, suggesting it might be Italy. In the forest where she lives, there are small birds, woodpeckers, pigeons, ladybugs, and Peynet trees growing abundantly. 11: "Timid Lovers"

Commentary: Peynet's lovers, though poor, live for love. A man slips a heart-shaped message under the gap of an old, small house's front door. Is it a message of courtship? Or a poem dedicated to her? She watches from the window. Will his courtship be accepted? Where did he meet her? Did he see her working at a shop in town? Have they known each other since childhood? Commentary: Early summer has arrived in Peynet's world. A woman has opened a bird market in the forest, and a man has come to visit it. Since the display counter is narrow, the woman from the forest also shows off birds perched on a very attractive branch protruding from her chest. The woman calls out, "Do you like any birds? We have owls and pigeons too!" but the man seems captivated by the perch on her chest, his gaze fixed there. The man asks, "I want those two small yellow birds. Will you sell me the perch too?" What will the woman's answer be? The strong red color of the orange sun and the woman's suit are striking against the dark green branches and leaves of a pair of trees, which frame an empty space in the middle. In 1974, an animated film titled "Peynet's World Tour of Love" was produced as a joint French-Italian effort, and NTT edited this animated film into a promotional video for television. In that video, the birds perched on the fishing rod successively took flight. I long for such a leisurely day by the quiet waterside, casting a line. In the sky from which the lover flew, countless heart marks remain, like jet streams. All the surrounding trees are adorned with fresh green leaves, and the tulips in the garden are in bloom. Small wildflowers, butterflies, owls, birds, rabbits, turtles, and snails on their backs—all the creatures of the hill seem to be enjoying the soft spring light. Commentary: Raymond Peynet's world also seems to exist in heaven. The name of this hotel is written as "Grand Hotel du Ciel et de la petite Ourse," which literally translates to "Grand Hotel of the Sky and the Little Bear." Angels and doves welcome lovers with wings on their backs. The angel asks the lovers, "Is it for one night or long-term?" Neither Christianity nor Greek mythology has a legend of Ursa Minor being heaven, so this is a story from Peynet's world. Since the lovers have wings, they seem to have become angels. They must have lived a good life, simple, without doing bad deeds, without hating, loving, and without lying. If they live in this hotel, will they also get halos above their heads, like the angels who greeted them, and become true angels? This work has an overall calm blue-gray tone, but the faint skin color and orange stardust around the angels are the only warm colors. The violet of the woman's skirt is also striking. Commentary: Peynet's lovers seem to be meeting at the park. The artist-like man sitting on a park bench, tired of waiting for her, has started divining with an angel's feather. He keeps asking "Will she come?" "Will she not come?", "Does she love me?" "Does she not love me?", so many times that the ground under the chair is full of angel feathers. The first angel has lost almost all its feathers and is crying. The second angel also has considerably fewer feathers. Nevertheless, the angels seem to be blessing the lovers. Angel feathers fall out and grow back anew. The poet is helping the angels grow new feathers while divining. Just as new, clean wool grows after sheep shearing, angel feathers also regrow. It is a memoir-like story of a country youth's romantic affairs in the mid-19th century, not entirely pure in its ideology. The French prefer sophisticated elegance over purity. People are refined through various experiences, but elegance may be refined through many loves. On the bed, birds, a dog, and angels who bless Peynet's lovers have arrived with bouquets. The woman's dress has an opening in the center, from which voluminous breasts protrude. Her nipples are covered by a black umbrella. Commentary: In Greek mythology, Aries is said to be the golden flying ram sent by Zeus to save the prince who was about to be killed by his stepmother. As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries individuals are said to exude fresh energy. They possess strong initiative and a challenging spirit, are competitive, and have a strong will to achieve their goals. However, they tend to prioritize their intuition and insist on their own way, which can lead to a lack of cooperativeness and being quick to enthusiasm and quick to lose interest.

In the center of the screen, the face of a ram is largely depicted, and the body part shows the sea with old sailing ships traversing it. Taurus individuals are said to have a calm and peaceful personality, with a cooperative nature, but also possess strong will and perseverance. They are also blessed with sensitivity and a fondness for owning beautiful things, which is why they are often said to have strong materialistic desires.

Commentary: In Greek mythology, it is said that Zeus, the Greek god, transformed his kind children, Castor and Pollux, into the Gemini constellation so they could always be together. Gemini individuals are said to have strong communication skills, excellent curiosity and expressiveness, and a proactive nature. They possess diverse expressive abilities for arts and interesting expressions, but they can also be easily bored and restless.

In the plaza between a pair of narrow, small two-story houses, a woman stands, and twin men on both sides offer her their hearts in courtship. Both houses appear small and humble. A towel is drying on a clothesline stretched between the two houses, and a cat balances on the line with an umbrella, while a small bird watches. Those born under Cancer are said to be full of love and value family and friends, so they are considerate of those around them without overtly expressing their rich emotions. On the other hand, they tend to react coolly to people they don't get along with.

A giant crab with a heart-shaped shell fills the entire screen. Inside the heart-shaped shell, there is a mountain of buildings with spires and domed roofs, symbolizing the medieval world. The entire surface is filled with the face of a lion and its mane. The overwhelming presence of the king of lions is powerfully expressed. Below the face of the king of lions, a world is depicted. Description: In Greek mythology, Virgo is said to be Demeter, the goddess of harvest and sister of the Greek god Zeus. Virgos possess both a girlish, dreamy delicacy and a realistic side that steadily brings ideals to fruition. They respect social conventions and rules, and therefore tend to be harsh towards those who go against them.

Amidst the trees in a park, a beautiful, pure, and slightly stern-looking woman, resembling a nun, stands holding lovers. Judging by the size of the lovers, she must be about three meters tall. She might be a goddess rather than a human. Between the branches of the trees behind her, a heart-shaped sky, seemingly an alternate dimension, is depicted, with doves flying. The lovers, symbolizing love, and the doves, symbols of peace, probably represent the goddess's ideals. People dressed as medieval travelers and medieval-style buildings are glimpsed between the trees, and small animals and flowers also seem to be participating in this world of love and peace. Description: In Greek mythology, the goddess Gaia, angered by the arrogant giant Orion, had a scorpion kill him. That scorpion is said to have become the constellation Scorpio. People born under Scorpio are reserved and don't show their emotions, but they are deeply affectionate, excel in concentration, perseverance, and insight, and devote themselves to those they trust. However, they tend to be jealous and aggressive towards opponents.

A giant scorpion with large eyes rears its tail into the sky, ready for battle. Lovers sit happily on its coiled tail. The woman looks at the man with a passionate expression and touches his body, typical of an affectionate Scorpio woman. The ground where the scorpion lies seems to be sandy, but exposed steep rocks are visible. The distant landscape also shows castles and spires built on islands surrounded by steep rocks. It looks like the sea and islands visible from the sandy beach where the scorpion is. A yellow sun or moon is depicted in the sky, blessing the lovers along with small animals like birds and flowers. In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is said to be Chiron, a master archer of the centaur tribe (half-human, half-horse), drawing his bow. People born under Sagittarius are adventurous and inquisitive, think deeply, are not bound by conventional ideas, and act energetically and freely. They are easily passionate and easily lose interest, so they tend to change romantic partners frequently, like a hunter of love, so caution is advised.

In the center of the bottom of the screen, a large tree, seemingly over 100 years old, extends upwards. The large tree branches out into many smaller branches, which extend like vines and, together with their leaves, form a large circle. Inside this circle, enclosed by branches and leaves, many buildings, seemingly from medieval and ancient times, are densely clustered. There appear to be buildings such as the Roman Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In front of the large tree, a man who is half-human and half-horse, and a woman holding a small package are depicted. He is aiming an arrow to win the woman's heart, but the woman, perhaps wary of his fickle nature, keeps a slight distance. Perhaps the package in the woman's hand contains a secret weapon to counter him.

Description: In Greek mythology, the pastoral god Pan, being chased by a monster, jumped into a river and tried to transform into a fish, but only his tail became a fish. Zeus, seeing Pan, is said to have lifted him into the sky and made him the constellation Capricorn. People born under Capricorn are said to have a serious and realistic personality, persevering in everything they do and possessing a strong will to see things through to the end.

In mythology, Capricorn's lower half became a fish, but in Peynet's Capricorn, it is a conch shell floating in the air. Inside this conch, lovers are embracing and seem to be enjoying an aerial stroll. A cupid, who seems to have brought these lovers together, holds an umbrella over them. This goat and the lovers appear to be very high up, with stars falling from above, and the moon and cities on Earth visible far below. The woman is clinging tightly to the man. Is it love for the man, or is she afraid of falling from the seashell airship? Perhaps the woman feels secure entrusting herself to the reliable and practical Capricorn man. Description: In Greek mythology, Zeus, the Greek god, kidnapped the beautiful boy Ganymede to serve him wine, and Ganymede is said to have become a constellation. People born under Aquarius have original and artistic sensibilities, and since they go at their own pace and don't show much interest in their surroundings, they may appear cool. However, they are actually philanthropic and kind to everyone. They dislike being constrained and act freely, so they are often misunderstood by those around them.

From the window on the upper floor, a man tips a water jar, scattering many hearts contained within. The window on the lower floor is also open, and a woman gazes at the heart flurry in rapture. Small birds pull at the chest area of the woman's clothes with their beaks from left and right, exposing her attractive bust. Another small bird perched on the window grille, along with the woman, is captivated by her beauty. Many clouds drift around these windows and between them. These upper and lower windows seem to be floating in the air. The flowers on the window shutters outside also appear to be floating in the air near the shutters, rather than attached to them. Description: In Greek mythology, Pisces is said to be Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, and her son Eros, represented as two fish tied together by a string. When they were attacked by a monster at a party on the Nile River, they tied themselves together with a string so they wouldn't be separated. People born under Pisces possess a romantic sensibility and a tolerant spirit, gently caring for others and valuing harmony, but they can be easily influenced by others and may appear indecisive. This gentleness can also be a source of instability.

In the legend, they are mother and son, but in this painting, they are depicted as merman lovers with the lower half of their bodies as fish. The angel holding an umbrella over the lovers has also transformed into a fish in its lower half. A large sailing ship is depicted, but it seems to be sunken at the bottom of the sea, with fish, shells, starfish, sea snakes, and seahorses appearing under and around the ship. However, the merman lovers appear to be floating in the air, with the sun depicted behind them. In the distance, an aquatic city is depicted, with architectural structures such as St. Mark's Basilica and St. George's Church in Venice, as well as the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
