Michel Henry's visit to Japan

In 1995, Michel Henry came to Japan and held an exhibition at the Nihonbashi Tokyu Department Store and the Tokyo Toyoko Department Store. That same year, a French-Japanese artist exhibition was held in the entrance hall of the Izuzu Motors headquarters building in Omori, and Michel Henry represented France. For the opening of this exhibition, former Minister of International Trade and Industry Mori Yoshiro (later Prime Minister and Chairman of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games) was invited as the guest of honour to the opening of this exhibition, and the French Consul was also in attendance. Mori Yoshiro, Michel Henry, and the French Consul in Tokyo cut the ribbon. Mori Yoshiro was a very considerate person, and was kind to Michel Henry, but even back then he had a tendency to make gaffes and said things that were quite incomprehensible, such as "I don't really understand paintings, etc." However, the interpreter was not very good, and the French people had given up on understanding the content of the speech from the start, so nothing happened.

I went to the airport to pick up Michel Henry, Ms. C, and the French female painter Monique Journaud, and headed straight for the Isuzu headquarters in Omori. However, I was extremely nervous with the French master Michel Henry in the car, and we made a right turn at a no-right-turn zone, and unfortunately a police car was chasing us. When the police car saw that there were three French people in the car, they said, "You have to save face, so you can go ahead today." Michel Henry was a little upset, saying, "It happened in my neighborhood, but I'm glad it wasn't an accident." My mind was blank.

From the next day, Michel Henry attended exhibitions at Nihonbashi Tokyu Department Store and Tokyu Department Store to entertain his fans. Michel Henry was friendly for a master, and was polite to customers, so he was well received by the department store staff and customers. Of course, the paintings sold well. I set prices that were not as high as those of Marc Estelle, who had previously sold Michel Henry's paintings, so Michel Henry was pleased and said, "You're conscientious." Sales were also satisfactory.

He also came to our store, Gallery Adeka, at the time and held a signing session for customers of Gallery Adeka. It was well received by our customers and our sales increased.

I would like to hold another Michel Henry exhibition at another department store next year.
