マリー・ローランサンは１８９３年パリに生まれ１９５６年パリ没。１０代から画家を志しピカソやブラックなどの画家や美術評論家で詩人のアポリネールなどと交流した。キュビスムの影響を受け１９１２年の個展が評判を呼び画家としてのデビューを果たす。その後キュビスムとは決別して、パステルカラーで独自の清楚で華やかな女性像を描き、人気作家となる。多くの上流婦人からのを受け、彼女達の肖像画も描くと同時に、バレーやオペラの舞台装置や舞台衣装の制作も行った。タラマ・ド・ランピカと共に２０世紀で最も人気を集めた女流画家である。
