Watercolor and ink on paper

Artwork Description

In the 1980s, Zao Wou-Ki explored a freer, more introspective world with watercolor and ink, alongside his monumental abstract oil paintings. This work is an extremely poetic piece that condenses the sensibility of his mature period.

Vibrant yellows and oranges spread across the canvas, with green and black lines dissolving into them. However, these colors are not merely decorative effects.

For Zao Wou-Ki, color was light itself, or a presence drifting in space.

Colors are not confined by outlines; they spread across the paper as if breathing, interpenetrating each other and creating undulations.

There is a sense of sky, earth, forest, and waterside, but it is never fixed as a concrete landscape.

The viewer is led to associate with nature, yet ultimately to the pure rhythm of color and brushwork.

The black ink lines, sometimes sharp, sometimes flowing, traverse the canvas, imparting a strong sense of vitality reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy.

However, it is not a reproduction of traditional calligraphy, but a reinterpretation into Zao Wou-Ki's unique abstract language.

The Eastern concept of "negative space" and the spatial composition of Western abstract painting naturally merge, creating both stillness and movement on the canvas.

This work has no discernible narrative.

Instead,

light and shadow
density and transparency
stillness and energy

constantly intertwine, directly affecting the viewer's senses.

Zao Wou-Ki did not depict landscapes,

but the breath and flow of energy inherent in nature itself.

He sought to portray the essence of nature.

This work is an excellent example of Zao Wou-Ki's art, unifying East and West, calligraphy and abstraction, construction and improvisation at a high level.
