Artwork Description
"The Pond" is an etching that beautifully exemplifies the fluid and poetic abstract expression Zao Wou-Ki achieved in the 1970s.
The "Pond" in the title is not treated as a concrete landscape depiction, but rather as a symbolic presence evoking the interplay of light and air on the water's surface, the subtle ripples, and the sense of stillness.
There are no clear outlines or distinct subjects depicted in the composition.
However, the overlapping deep black tones and softly diffused hues create a tranquil space, like a waterside emerging from a mist.
Zao Wou-Ki forged a unique spatial expression by merging the dynamism of Western abstract painting with the sense of negative space and breath derived from Chinese painting.
This characteristic is strongly evident in this work; the canvas is not a fixed composition but an "internal landscape" that constantly shifts according to the viewer's perception.
Furthermore, the delicate lines and bleeds characteristic of etching create a light rhythm reminiscent of ink wash painting.
Within the depth of black, transparent, jade-like colors and faint purple nuances drift, imbuing the stillness with a rich sense of vitality.
Zao Wou-Ki's works do not directly depict nature;
Instead, they portray:
Light
Wind
Water
Atmosphere
— intangible elements that take no concrete form.
"The Pond" is also a deeply poetic work that sublimates the memories and sensations of nature into an abstract space.
Title Explanation
The Pond
means, in English,
"pond"
or
"waterside."
However, in this work, it functions not merely as a landscape title, but as a poetic designation symbolizing:
- Still water surface
- Wavering reflections
- Silence
- Profound inner space
It serves as a poetic title.
