Artwork Description

Created in 1989, this work represents one of Zao Wou-Ki's mature print expressions. A light and fluid atmosphere pervades the entire composition, with colors and empty spaces delicately resonating to create a quiet poetic sensibility.

From the softly blending yellow background, forms resembling the roots of the earth or natural life quietly emerge. They exist as if appearing and disappearing without clear outlines, evoking diverse landscapes in the viewer's imagination.

This work strongly reflects a spirituality akin to traditional Chinese painting techniques, particularly "suiboku" (ink wash) and "hatsuboku" (splashed ink). The thinly layered colors show a natural spread as if water is permeating paper, fusing Eastern breath and the beauty of empty space within Western printmaking techniques.

In the late 1980s, Zao Wou-Ki moved towards a more concise and refined abstract expression, paring down forms to their utmost while attempting to depict light, atmosphere, and space itself. In this work, too, a world of stillness and spiritual depth unfolds through the vibrant, delicate colors and soft gradations.
