Work Description
"Beryl négatif" is a significant relief work created by Victor Vasarely in 1967, demonstrating his exploration of optical illusion and three-dimensional structure.
This piece is one of a series of 11 square tableau reliefs published by the Denise René gallery in Paris, each having a "positive" and "negative" counterpart.
With its precisely composed geometric basic forms, vibrant colors, and three-dimensional relief structure, the work creates a strong sense of depth and spatial vibration. Flatness and three-dimensionality, protrusion and indentation, light and shadow intricately intersect, providing the viewer with a constantly changing visual experience.
As the title "négatif" suggests, this work explores spatial relationships by inverting conventional structures, with convex and concave, and foreground and background, reversed to create a unique tension.
The materiality of the wooden relief and its vivid colors powerfully embody Vasarely's sculptural philosophy, which can be described as "the architecture of vision."
It is a critically important work that demonstrates how Op Art transcended two-dimensional expression and expanded into actual three-dimensional space.
