《Living Organism》 Hiroko Saegusa Artwork Description

This work features a powerful golden paint swirl forming a large ring in the center of a deep black ground. As the artist herself states, this golden ring is a symbolic motif that visualizes the cycle of life itself, which repeats birth and rebirth.

Composition and Matière At the center of the canvas, multiple layers of golden splashes and drips, seemingly rotating clockwise, form a swirling ring. Thin lines radiating outwards and granular raised areas placed at key points suggest not merely a geometric circle, but a living ring that breathes and pulsates. The composition, which naturally guides the viewer's gaze from the periphery to the center, or from the center outwards, seems to allude to a circular movement with no beginning or end—that is, the perpetual cycle of life.

Color Contrast The jet-black background evokes silence and profundity, while the faint traces of red peeking through in places suggest the heat and pulse hidden within life, or the memories of pain. The presence of this restrained red imbues the golden glow with a weight that encompasses life and death, rather than mere brilliance. The gold itself, rather than a uniform luster, exhibits variations in shade within its raised areas and scattered splashes, expressing the constantly changing energy of life.

Theme As the title "Living Organism" suggests, this work does not depict a specific creature, but rather abstracts and presents the essence of the phenomenon of life itself—the cyclical nature where an end is also a beginning. The golden ring, quietly but surely emitting light in the darkness, can be said to symbolize the very nature of life, which does not require external validation and possesses the power of regeneration within itself.

The composition, in which the stillness of black and the dynamism of gold are in tension while converging into a single ring, embodies the artist's consistent theme that order and permanence reside within chaos.

Artist's Comment
A single golden ring floats in the black darkness. It symbolizes the cycle of life, repeating end and beginning, birth and rebirth. In the silence,
life continues to emit light.
