"Affirmation of the Unfinished" by Hiroko Saegusa - Artwork Description
This large-scale work is filled with energy, featuring a fierce interplay of red, yellow, blue, and green. The vertically flowing paint and black lines that permeate the entire canvas create an intense visual effect, like burning flames or falling bands of light.
Composition and Matière While based on vertical dripping, several layers of large, arcing black lines in the center provide unity and a focal point of movement to the canvas. These circular lines suggest the "unfinished" form itself, not quite closed, and along with the splatters and drips of paint, they inscribe the process of continuous generation and change onto the canvas. The upper part, with its dense concentration of colors, gives a heavy impression, while white empty space appears towards the bottom, bringing a breathing rhythm and sense of openness to the entire work.
Color Contrast With red and yellow as the main axis, accents of blue, green, and purple inserted here and there add tension and depth to the often monotonous sequence of warm colors. The black splatters and lines, while segmenting the colors, also function as a skeletal structure that holds the canvas together, revealing a single structure within the chaos.
Theme As indicated by the title "Affirmation of the Unfinished," this work's theme is not a completed, static beauty, but the process of constant change itself. As the artist states, being unfinished is not a lack but a state pregnant with possibilities. The philosophy that an open stance embracing growth, transformation, and change is the essence of humanity is visualized through the torrent of colors spreading across the canvas and the unclosed circular lines.
The coexistence of intense color clashes and the gently unifying arcing composition makes this a dynamic work where opposing forces—chaos and order, destruction and creation—are in equilibrium.
Artist's Comment: To be unfinished is not to be imperfect, but to be pregnant with possibilities. This work celebrates the value of humans as beings in constant flux. Growth, transformation, and an open stance embracing change are the essential expressions of humanity.
