Description of the work Two people are depicted facing each other. The painting features Rouault's distinctive bold outlines, and uses light blue, blue, and light brown, giving the work a jewel-like shine and transparency.

He often painted poor people and religious themes, using his own thick outlines and dark colors such as black and brown, but he also painted many sublime religious paintings, giving jewel-like brilliance and light to blue, green, and orange. He would repaint the paintings as many times as he wanted until he was satisfied, so his oil paintings were extremely thick and many colors were layered on top of each other. He also produced many aquatint copperplate prints.
