Raymond Peynet was the most popular illustrator in 20th-century France, and there are several museums dedicated to his work in France and Japan. His works depict the love between couples, always surrounded by small animals, trees, and flowers, conveying a message of love and peace. His empathy for small animals and plants also relates to environmental protection. In Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, a sculpture of Peynet's lovers is displayed as a symbol of world peace. This original etching was produced in a series in France in 1978. It is, of course, new. It is sold out even in France, and only second-hand items are available on the market. For information on Peynet's museums, please see the following website.

【Artwork Description】
In Greek mythology, Pisces is said to be the form of two fish, connected by a rope, representing Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, and her son Eros. It is said that when they were attacked by a monster at a party on the Nile River, they tied themselves together with a rope so as not to be separated. People born under Pisces are romantic and tolerant, gentle and considerate of others, and value harmony, but they can also be easily influenced by others and appear indecisive. This instability is said to be due to their gentleness.
In the legend, they are mother and son, but in this painting, they are depicted as lovers who are mermen with fish tails. The angel holding an umbrella over the lovers also has a fish tail. A large sailing ship is depicted, but it seems to be submerged in the sea, and fish, shells, starfish, sea snakes, and seahorses also appear below and around the ship. However, the mer-lovers seem to be floating in the air, with the sun depicted behind them. In the distance, a water city is depicted, along with architectural structures such as St. Mark's Basilica and the spires of St. George's Church in Venice, as well as the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The artist is reaching out in courtship, but the woman seems to be looking away, unable to decide. Gallery Adekat, Yasuhiro Takeda
【Galerie Adekat】 purchased 5,000 copies around 1992 from Mr. Alexandre Tocart, the nephew of Mr. Muret, Peynet's publisher (who co-produced Raymond Peynet's prints with Raymond Peynet, and Raymond Peynet signed them personally) and the representative of the French distributor of the prints (Editions des Cercles).

Since Galerie Adekat managed Gallery Vent de France at Karuizawa Prince Hotel for 20 years from 1995 to 2015, it also had a close relationship with the Peynet Museum in Karuizawa. To promote cultural exchange between the Karuizawa Peynet Museum and the Raymond Peynet and Humorous Painters Museum in Antibes, southern France, Galerie Adekat sent a representative from the Karuizawa Peynet Museum to maintain communication with the Antibes Peynet Museum and Raymond Peynet's daughter, Annie Peynet.
Raymond Peynet's artistic world depicts a paradise where small animals and plants coexist happily, centered on the love of couples. In the 21st century, with its ongoing environmental destruction and wars, Raymond Peynet's paintings of love and peace are considered a message to the present day. We hope that by experiencing Raymond Peynet's world surrounded by peace, love, and gentle nature, you will cultivate a heart that values peace, love, and our fellow inhabitants of Earth: nature, animals, and plants.
