Description

The "Nanas" series was created in 1964, inspired by the pregnancy of Niki de Saint Phalle's friend, Clarice Rivers.

**Niki de Saint Phalle** created vibrant, dancing female figures with rich, blossoming forms. These colorful figures symbolize women who are free, joyful, and powerful.

These dynamic works express the diverse forms of femininity and represent a significant departure from traditional depictions of women.

However, behind this vibrant color and vitality lies a deep spirit of rebellion. The "Nanas" series is not merely a celebration of women, but also a political expression against society.

It was an attempt to challenge, through art, the values of a society dominated by masculine reason and science.

She wrote in her autobiography, 'Traces':

"Women in male civilization are like blacks in white civilization.
Women have the right to refuse and rebel. The flag of blood will be raised."

Niki de Saint Phalle questioned perceptions of the body and societal norms, advocating for the right to exist freely outside established frameworks.

Her art is also a political gesture that encourages new ways of thinking about the body, gender, and society. "Nanas" are beloved by many as a symbol of female power, embodying both joy and rebellion.
