Artwork Description
A self-taught and versatile artist, Niki de Saint Phalle created a unique and instantly recognizable world. She is particularly known for her "Nanas" series, bold representations of voluptuous female figures, widely recognized as monumental sculptures installed in public spaces.
The artist placed great importance on the positive power of art, and her works often have a healing aspect. She once said:
"My passion is to bring moments of joy to people through art, however small."
This lithograph is based on an illustration from the children's book "Méchant Méchant," created in collaboration with author Laurent Condominas in the same year. The story is a tale of friendship, where children work together to retrieve toys stolen by a monster.
Its naive and vibrant colors and lines are reminiscent of children's drawings, giving viewers a sense of familiarity.
In this work, a female merchant stands behind a counter. Her figure bears characteristics reminiscent of a "Nana," and into this seemingly ordinary scene, a reptile-like creature stealthily approaches.
While appearing to be a simple, childlike expression, this work carries a quiet tension, hinting at the ever-present proximity of danger.
