Marie Laurencin was born in Paris in 1893 and died in Paris in 1956. She aspired to be a painter from her teenage years, and interacted with painters such as Picasso and Braque, as well as art critic and poet Apollinaire. Influenced by Cubism, she made her debut as a painter after a well-received solo exhibition in 1912. She then broke away from Cubism and became a popular artist, painting her own unique, pure and glamorous images of women in pastel colors. She received commissions from many upper-class ladies, and while she painted their portraits, she also designed the stage sets and costumes for ballets and operas. Along with Tarama de Lampica, she was one of the most popular female painters of the 20th century.
