A representative painter of the School of Paris from Barcelona. While participating in the Surrealist movement in Paris, he was heavily influenced by Surrealism, but instead of continuing with long, thin forms, he created his own unique object forms, forming a world of Miró's unique abstract paintings that were enjoyable like music. He expanded his activities to include painting, prints, ceramics, sculptures, and outdoor mural sculptures, achieving worldwide success.

1893 Born in Tarragona, Spain, the son of a goldsmith and watchmaker

1907 Enters La Llotja School of Art in Barcelona

1912 Enters Francisco Gali School of Art

1915 Influenced by the French Fauves, he begins to paint his own unique portraits and landscapes.

1918 Holds a solo exhibition at Dalmau Gallery

1919 Travels to Paris and interacts with Picasso. For the next 20 years, he enjoys Barcelona and Paris.

1920 Joins the Dadaism movement

1923 Moves away from realism and begins to paint symbolic images.

1924 Joins the Surrealist movement with André Breton and others.

1926 Responsible for the stage design of the Russian Ballet's Romeo and Juliet.

1930 Solo exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, and New York. Creates his first lithograph.

1931 Paris gallery exhibits object sculptures.

1933 Creates his first etching.

1936 Flees to France.

1940 Creates his masterpiece "Constellations" series, establishing Miró's unique figurative expression.

Emigrates to Mallorca, Spain.

1941 The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds a retrospective.

1946 Exhibits with Dalí, Picasso, and Gris at the "Four Spanish Painters" exhibition in Boston.

1947 Visits New York for the first time and creates a large mural.

From this time on, as a globally renowned and respected painter, retrospectives and exhibitions are held, and museums around the world compete to acquire his works.

1949 Retrospective at Kunsthalle Bern.

1950 Solo exhibition of objects and prints at Galerie Maeght in Paris.

1951 Solo exhibitions in New York and Houston.

1953 Galerie Maeght in Paris and Matisse Gallery in New York hold solo exhibitions.

1954 Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Germany holds a retrospective.

1960 Creates a ceramic mural for Harvard University.

1962 A major retrospective is held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

1966 Visits Japan for a major retrospective in Tokyo and Kyoto.

1967 Miró mural installed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

1973 A solo exhibition of sculptures and ceramic works is held at the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds "The Miró Collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York" exhibition.

1975 The Joan Miró Foundation - Center for the Study of Contemporary Art, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, opens in Montjuïc Park in Barcelona.

1979 A retrospective of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and watercolors is held at the Maeght Foundation.

1983 "Joan Miró:Anys20" an exhibition of paintings from the 1920s, is held at the Miró Foundation in Barcelona. He continues to live in his home in Palma de Mallorca.

The Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona houses over 10,000 works, and his works are also held in museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
