A prominent painter of the School of Paris, originally from Barcelona. While participating in the Surrealist movement in Paris and being strongly influenced by Surrealism, he created his own unique object forms instead of elongated continuations, forming a world of abstract art unique to Miró, joyful like music. He expanded his activities beyond paintings and prints to ceramics, sculptures, outdoor sculptures, and murals, achieving worldwide success.

1893 Born in Spain, the son of a jeweler and watchmaker.

1907 Enters La Llotja School of Art in Barcelona.

1912 Enters Francesc Galí School of Art.

1915 Begins painting unique portraits and landscapes while influenced by French Fauvism.

1918 Holds a solo exhibition at the Dalmau Gallery.

1919 Travels to Paris and collaborates with Picasso. For the next 20 years, he enjoys barbecue and Paris.

1920 Participates in the Dada movement.

1923 Begins to move away from realism and paint symbolic pictures.

1924 Participates in the Surrealist movement with André Breton and others.

1926 Designed stage sets for the Russian Ballet's Romeo and Juliet.

1930 Solo exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, and New York. Creates his first lithograph.

1931 Exhibition of objects and sculptures at a Paris gallery.

1933 Creates his first etching.

1936 Exiles to France.

1940 Creates his masterpiece "Constellations" series, establishing his unique pictorial expression.

Moves to Mallorca, Spain.

1941 The Museum of Modern Art in New York holds a retrospective.

1946 Exhibits with Dali, Picasso, and Gris in the "Four Spaniards" exhibition held in Boston.

1947 Visits New York for the first time and creates large murals.

Around this time, he gained international recognition and a reputation as a leading painter, with retrospectives and exhibitions held worldwide, and museums around the globe eagerly collecting his works.

1949 Retrospective at Kunsthalle Bern.

1950 Exhibition of objects and prints at the Maeght Gallery in Paris.

1951 Solo exhibitions in New York and Houston.

1953 Solo exhibitions held at Galerie Maeght in Paris and Matisse Gallery in New York

1954 Retrospective exhibition held at Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Germany

1960 Created a ceramic mural for Harvard University

1962 Large retrospective exhibition held at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris

1966 Visited Japan for large retrospective exhibitions in Tokyo and Kyoto

1967 Miró mural installed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York

1973 Solo exhibition of sculptures and ceramic works held at the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. "Miró Collection at the Museum of Modern Art, New York" exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

1975 Fundació Joan Miró - Centre for the Study of Contemporary Art, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, opens in Montjuïc Park, Barcelona.

1979 Retrospective exhibition of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and watercolors held at the Maeght Foundation.

1983 "Joan Miró:Anys20" exhibition featuring paintings from the 1920s held at the Fundació Miró in Barcelona. Continues at his home in Palma de Mallorca.

The Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona houses over 10,000 works, and works by Miró are also housed in museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
