A representative painter of the School of Paris from Barcelona. While participating in the Surrealist movement in Paris and heavily influenced by Surrealism, he created his own unique object forms instead of long, drawn-out ones, and formed a world of Miro's unique abstract paintings filled with music. He expanded his activities to include paintings, prints, ceramics, sculptures, and outdoor mural sculptures, achieving global success.

1893 Born in Tarragona, Spain, as the son of a jeweler and watchmaker.

1907 Enters La Llotja School of Fine Arts in Barcelona.

1912 Enters Francesc Galí Art Academy.

1915 Begins painting unique portraits and landscapes, influenced by French Fauvism.

1918 Holds a solo exhibition at Dalmau Gallery.

1919 Meets Picasso in Paris, and enjoys barbecue and Paris for the next 20 years.

1920 Participates in the Dadaist movement.

1923 Begins to move away from realism and paint symbolic pictures.

1924 Participates in the Surrealist movement with André Breton and others.

1926 Designs the stage for Romeo and Juliet for the Ballets Russes.

1930 Solo exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, and New York. Creates his first lithographs.

1931 Exhibition of objects and sculptures at a Paris gallery.

1933 Equipped with his first etching.

1936 Exiled to France.

1940 Creates the "Constellations" series, establishing his unique pictorial language.

Moves to Majorca, Spain.

1941 Retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

1946 Exhibits alongside Dali, Picasso, and Gris in the "Four Spaniards" exhibition held in Boston.

1947 Visits New York for the first time and creates a large mural.

From this time, his reputation and recognition as a world-renowned painter grew, retrospective exhibitions and shows were held, and museums worldwide competed to acquire his works.

1973 Solo exhibition of sculptures and ceramic works held at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. The "Miró Collection at MoMA" exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

1975 The Fundació Joan Miró - Centre for the Study of Contemporary Art, designed by Jose Luis Sert, opens in Montjuïc Park, Barcelona.

1979 Retrospective exhibition of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and watercolors held at the Maeght Foundation.

1983 The "Joan Miró: Anys 20" exhibition of paintings from the 1920s held at the Miró Foundation in Barcelona. Continued at his home in Palma de Mallorca.
