A representative painter of the École de Paris from Barcelona. While participating in the Surrealism movement in Paris and heavily influenced by Surrealism, he created his own unique object forms, breaking away from the thin and long lines, and formed Miro's unique abstract art world, full of musicality. He expanded his activities to paintings and prints, as well as ceramics, sculptures, and outdoor murals, achieving success worldwide.

1893 Born in Spain, the son of a jeweler and watchmaker.

1907 Enrolled at La Llotja School of Art in Barcelona.

1912 Enrolled at Francisco Gali School of Art.

1915 Began painting his own portraits and landscapes while being influenced by French Fauvism.

1918 Held a solo exhibition at the Dalmau Gallery.

1919 Traveled to Paris and interacted with Picasso. Enjoyed barbecue and Paris for the next 20 years.

1920 Participated in the Dadaism movement.

1923 Began painting symbolic images, moving away from realism.

1924 Participated in the Surrealism movement with André Breton and others.

1926 Responsible for the stage design of the Russian Ballet's Romeo and Juliet.

1930 Solo exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, and New York. Created his first lithograph.

1931 Exhibition of objects and sculptures at a Paris gallery.

1933 Repeated his first etching.

1936 Exiled to France.

1940 Created his masterpiece "Constellations" series, establishing Miro's unique expression of figures.

Moved to Mallorca, Spain.

1941 The Museum of Modern Art in New York held a retrospective.

1946 Exhibited alongside Dali, Picasso, and Gris in the "Four Spaniards" exhibition held in Boston.

1947 Visited New York for the first time and created large murals.

Around this time, as a world-renowned artist, his reputation and evaluations grew, retrospectives and exhibitions were held, and museums around the world eagerly acquired his works.

1949 Retrospective at Kunsthalle Bern.

1950 Solo exhibition of objects and prints held at the Maeght Gallery in Paris.

1951 Solo exhibitions held in New York and Houston.

1953 Solo exhibitions held at the Maeght Gallery in Paris and the Matisse Gallery in New York.

1954 The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Germany held a retrospective.

1960 Created a ceramic mural at Harvard University.

1962 A large retrospective exhibition held at the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

1966 Visited Japan for a large retrospective exhibition in Tokyo and Kyoto.

1967 Miro mural installed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

1973 Solo exhibition of sculptures and ceramic works held at the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. "Miro Collection at the Museum of Modern Art" exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

1975 The Joan Miró Foundation - Center for the Study of Contemporary Art, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, opens in Montjuïc Park, Barcelona.

1979 Retrospective exhibition of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and watercolors held at the Maeght Foundation.

1983 The "Joan Miró: Anys 20" exhibition of paintings from the 1920s held at the Miró Foundation in Barcelona. Passed away at his home in Palma de Mallorca.

More than 10,000 works are housed in the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, and works are also housed in museums around the world, such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
