His wire-like lines create a pictorial space that gives the impression of another dimension, and he paints buildings and people in a fantastical way while maintaining a concrete appearance. He also produces prints in addition to paintings. He has also illustrated works by Hemingway and Albert Camus. Jean Carzou was born in Syria in 1907. He studied at the School of Architecture in Paris, and later studied painting at the Montparnasse Institute. In 1955, he was selected as one of the 10 most representative contemporary painters at the exhibition "Witness Painters of Our Time." In 1956, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur. In 1958, he was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters. In 1976, a commemorative stamp of Carzou was issued. In 1977, he was elected as a member of the Institut de France. In 2000, he passed away in France. Museums where his works are stored include the Hermitage Museum, Chicago Art Institute, etc.
