A representative painter of the School of Paris, 1887 - 1985.

With diverse and brilliant colors, he depicted the love between men and women, biblical stories, and mythological worlds as fairy tales. Landscapes and figures melt into color, and time and space merge in his painting world of illusory colors and atmosphere. One can feel the love for his wife and hometown, as well as a message seeking love and peace.

1907 Studied at the St. Petersburg Art School (St. Petersburg).

1909 Studied at the St. Petersburg Art School (St. Petersburg).

1910 Moved to Paris and interacted with Fernand Léger, Modigliani, Delaunay, Apollinaire, and others.

1914 Held his first solo exhibition nearby, showing cubist influences.

1915 Married Bella, a fellow countrywoman. Lived in Russia after the October Revolution.

1917 Returned to Paris and established his unique mystical and supernatural style.

1922 Created the copperplate print collection "My Life" from memories.

1923 Produced copperplate prints for Gogol's "Dead Souls" and La Fontaine's "Fables" at the request of art dealer Vollard.

1931 Traveled to Palestine to create the "Bible" series.

1941 Fled to America to escape Nazi persecution.

1944 His beloved wife Bella died in America.

1945 Held an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

1948 Produced the print collection "Arabian Nights".

1950 Acquired French citizenship and moved to the South of France.

1952 Remarried to Valentina Brodsky.

1954 Began creating the lithograph collection "Daphnis and Chloe".

1956 Created lithographs with a circus theme. Published the copperplate print collection "Bible".

1958 Created the lithograph collection "Bible".

1963 Created the ceiling painting for the Paris Opera. Major retrospective exhibitions held in Tokyo and Kyoto.

1966 Donated the large series of 17 "Biblical Message" works to the French Republic.

1967 Major retrospective exhibitions celebrating his 80th birthday held in Zurich and Cologne.

The Louvre Museum held the "Message Biblique" exhibition.

1973 The "Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall" (now the Marc Chagall Museum) was built in Nice.

1976 The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo held a solo exhibition.

1985 Died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Southern France.

Museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, vied to collect his works.
