A leading painter of the Ecole de Paris1887-1985.

He depicted the love between men and women, the Bible, and the world of mythology as a fairy tale world with diverse and brilliant colors. Landscapes and figures melt into colors, and time and space merge to create a world of painting with illusory colors and atmosphere, from which one can feel his love for his wife and hometown, and a message seeking love and peace.

 1887Born in Vitebsk, Russia (now Belarus).

1907Studied at the St. Petersburg School of Fine Arts (St. Petersburg).

1909Studied at the St. Petersburg School of Fine Arts (St. Petersburg).

1910Moved to Paris, where he interacted with Fernand Léger, Modigliani, Delaunay, Apollinaire, and others.

1914Held his first solo exhibition nearby, showing cubist influences.

1915Married Bella from his hometown. Lived in Russia after the October Revolution.

1917Returned to Paris. Established Chagall's unique mystical and supernatural style.

1922Created the copperplate print collection "My Life" in memory.

1923Commissioned by art dealer Vollard to create copperplate prints for Gogol's "Dead Souls" and La Fontaine's "Fables."

1931Traveled to Palestine to create the "Bible" series.

1941Fled Nazi persecution and emigrated to the United States.

1944His beloved wife Bella died in the United States.

1945Held an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the High School of Art Institute.

1948Created the print collection "Arabian Nights."

1950Acquired French citizenship and moved to the South of France.

1952Remarried to Valentina Brodsky.

1954Began creating the lithograph collection "Daphnis and Chloe."

1956Created lithographs with a circus theme. Published the copperplate print collection "The Bible."

1958Created the lithograph collection "The Bible."

1963Created the ceiling painting for the Paris Opera. Held a major retrospective exhibition in Tokyo and Kyoto.

1966Donated a series of 17 major works titled "The Biblical Message" to the French Republic.

1967A major retrospective exhibition commemorating his 80th birthday was held in Zurich and Cologne.

The Louvre Museum held the "Biblical Message Exhibition."

1973The Marc Chagall National Museum of the Biblical Message (now the Marc Chagall Museum) was built in Nice.

1976The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, held a solo exhibition.

1985Died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Southern France.

Museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, eagerly acquired his works.
