Representative painters of the Ecole de Paris 1887-1985

With diverse and gorgeous colors, he depicted love between men and women, the Bible, and the world of mythology as a fairy tale world. Landscapes and people blend together in the colors, and time and space are fused together in a pictorial world of fantastic colors and atmosphere. From the paintings, you can feel the love for his wife and hometown, as well as a message of longing for love and peace.

 

Born in 1887 in Vitebsk, Russia (now Belarus)

1907 : Studied at the Petersburg Academy of Art (St. Petersburg).

1909 : Studied at the Petersburg Academy of Art (St. Petersburg).

Moved to Paris in 1910 and interacted with Fernand Léger, Modigliani, Delaunay, Apollinaire, and others.

1914 : First solo exhibition held nearby, showing influences of Cubism

In 1915 , he married Vera, who was from the same hometown, and they lived in Russia after the October Revolution .

1917 : Return to Paris. Chagall establishes his unique mystical and supernatural style.

1922 Created the copperplate engraving collection "My Life" based on memories

1923 : At the request of the art dealer Vollard, he produced copperplate prints of Gogol's "Dead Souls" and Lafontaine's "Fables."

1931 Traveled to Palestine to create the "Bible" series

In 1941 , he fled to the United States to escape Nazi persecution.

1944 : His beloved wife Bella dies in America

1945 : Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Art Institute of New York hold a "Thinking" exhibition.

1948 : Created the Arabian Nights print collection

1950 : Acquired French citizenship and moved to the south of France

In 1952 he married Valentine Brodsky.

1954 : Started production of the lithograph collection Daphnis and Crie

1956 : Produced lithographs with the theme of the circus. Released the copperplate print collection "Bible."

1958 : Produced the lithograph collection "Bible"

1963 : Created ceiling painting for the Paris Opera. Large retrospective exhibition held in Tokyo and Kyoto.

In 1966 , he donated 17 volumes of the Bible to the French Republic.

A major retrospective celebrating the 80th anniversary of his birth ( 1967 ) will be held in Zurich and Cologne

The Louvre Museum holds the "Bible's Message" exhibition

1973 : The Marc Chagall Bible Message National Museum (now the Marc Chagall Museum) in Nice.

1976 : Solo exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo

He died in 1985 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, southern France.

Museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, competed to acquire his works.
