Work Description
This work, "Les Hespérides," created in 1957, belongs to the later period of Jean-Michel Atlan's career, when he was recognized as one of the leading painters of postwar lyrical abstraction. The title is derived from the Hesperides, nymphs from Greek mythology who guarded the gods' garden and the golden apples symbolizing immortality.
Rather than directly depicting the myth, Atlan expresses its poetic and cosmic imagery through the rhythm of undulating lines and vibrating colors. Strong black brushstrokes form the skeletal structure of the painting, while areas of color evoke an earthly yet simultaneously celestial space.
