Artwork Description
Created in 1957, "Les Hespérides" belongs to Jean-Michel Atlan's late period, a time when he was recognized as one of the leading painters of post-war lyrical abstraction. The title refers to the Hesperides, nymphs in Greek mythology who guarded the gods' garden and the golden apples symbolizing immortality.
Rather than directly depicting the myth, Atlan expresses its poetic and cosmic image through the rhythm of undulating lines and vibrant colors. Strong black brushstrokes form the structure of the composition, while the colored planes evoke a space that is both earthly and celestial.
