In contrast to the previous works on white backgrounds, this piece is depicted on a jet-black ground. A white, sharply outlined fox stands, gazing back at the viewer, as if emerging from the darkness. The fur is rendered through a meticulous accumulation of lines, maintaining a soft texture and volume even within the gloom. A small window is open around its belly, and within a bone-like shape, patterns reminiscent of fungi and microorganisms subtly stir. The use of this black background, which enhances the fox's presence as a nocturnal hunter, gives the work a unique presence among Ambroise & Victor's oeuvre, quietly conveying their consistent perspective that small life still resides even in the depths of darkness.
