Yayoi Kusama, Female Image: Chiechan, Sculpture, Watercolor & Etching

225x83.5x84.5cm 86.8x32.9x33.3in

This work is reminiscent of the many figurative three-dimensional pieces Yayoi Kusama created in her later years. In these pieces, the charmingly naive female figures combine with Kusama's characteristic repetitive patterns and vibrant colors, creating a fairytale-like world that also conveys deep spirituality.

The woman standing quietly facing forward gives an impression of innocence and purity. Her simplified features do not represent a specific individual, but rather symbolize the universal existence of humanity itself.

The black net pattern covering the vibrant pink dress evokes Kusama Yayoi's "Infinity Nets," which she has been painting since the 1950s. The countless interconnected lines express the continuity of life and the infinity of the universe, drawing the viewer into an endless spiritual world.

Meanwhile, the vibrant blue, yellow, and red polka dots seen on the hat, hair, and shoes are motifs that symbolize Kusama's art. The two major themes of Kusama — nets and polka dots — coexist in a single work, showcasing her creativity not only as a painter but also as a sculptor.

This female figure appears less like a real person and more like a being emerged from dreams or memories. While the form is simple and approachable, it embodies the ideas of "self-obliteration," "repetition," and "infinity" that Kusama pursued throughout her life. Through this quiet figure, viewers can perceive a universal world of life that transcends individual existence.

Furthermore, the warm form of this work also expresses the happiness and humor characteristic of Kusama's art. Despite being complex contemporary art, its universal appeal is one of the great charms of Kusama's work.

This is a human sculpture unique to Yayoi Kusama, where endlessly spreading net patterns and vibrant polka dots are integrated. The simple female figure is expressed as a universal being beyond the individual, symbolizing the artist's fundamental themes of the continuity of life and oneness with the universe. It is a captivating work that combines the approachability of a fairytale character with deep spirituality.

A human sculpture adorned with vibrant colors and Yayoi Kusama's symbolic net and polka dot patterns. It is a work full of warmth and poetic sentiment, expressing the richness of life and the infinity of the universe through an innocent female figure.
