Andre Brasilier
André Brasilier (1929-2025) was one of the leading figures in French figurative painting after World War II, establishing an international reputation with his poetic works featuring horses, music, women, and nature.
While abstract art and Art Informel gained significant influence in the post-World War II art world, Brasilier consistently pursued figurative expression. His works are highly regarded as a contemporary continuation of the lyricism and refined sense of color traditionally inherited by French art.
The Flowering of Young Talent
Born in Saumur, western France, in 1929, Brasilier grew up in a family of artists. His father was a painter, and he spent his childhood surrounded by art.
His talent was recognized early, and he went on to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In 1953, he won the Grand Prix de Rome, one of France's most prestigious art awards. This award brought Brasilier widespread recognition as a promising young painter in the French art scene.
The Painter of Horses
The presence of "horses" is indispensable when discussing Brasilier's work.
Horses running across meadows, horses standing by a lake, horses moving through a forest — horses are central motifs in many of Brasilier's works.
However, what he painted was not merely horses as animals.
For Brasilier, horses symbolized freedom, vitality, and harmony with nature.
Full of dynamism yet calm and dignified, these horses embody the very spirit of Brasilier's art.
For this reason, Brasilier is often referred to as "the painter of horses."
A Deep Love for Music
Another important theme in Brasilier's work is music.
He deeply loved classical music and depicted musicians and concert scenes in many of his works.
Works featuring orchestras, pianists, conductors, and concert halls possess a beauty as if musical melodies and rhythms are expressed directly in color.
Brasilier viewed painting and music as the same artistic expression, and his works give the impression of quiet melodies resonating.
A World Full of Nature and Light
Brasilier's works also feature many natural motifs, such as forests, lakes, flowers, birds, and seasonal landscapes.
Nature is not merely a background but is depicted as a world of life in harmony with humanity.
In particular, the transparent colors based on blue, green, and white are a great appeal of Brasilier's art.
The soft light and serene atmosphere that envelop the entire canvas bring peace and a sense of well-being to the viewer.
His lyrical expression evokes a sense of coexistence with nature and spiritual richness that is being lost in modern society.
Position in Post-War French Figurative Painting
While abstract art dominated European art after the war, Brasilier continued to believe in the possibilities of figurative painting.
His work differs from realism and does not aim to reproduce reality as it is.
Rather, the focus is on expressing the inherent beauty and poetic quality of nature, music, and humanity.
For this reason, Brasilier is positioned alongside Bernard Buffet and Jean-Pierre Cassigneul as one of the representative painters of post-war French figurative painting.
Popularity in Japan
Brasilier enjoys very high popularity in Japan.
Since the 1980s, many exhibitions have been held, and his refined sense of color and gentle world of art have received strong support from Japanese art lovers and collectors.
Elements such as respect for nature, the beauty of silence, and delicate color expression deeply resonate with the Japanese aesthetic sense.
Even today, Brasilier's works maintain high acclaim both domestically and internationally, and continue to be cherished by many collectors.
Brasilier's Print Works
In addition to oil paintings, André Brasilier actively engaged in printmaking, primarily lithographs.
In his print works, representative themes such as horses, music, women, and nature are expressed in great numbers, allowing for an intimate enjoyment of Brasilier's artistic charm.
Brasilier's print works, with their transparent colors and refined compositions, have garnered high popularity among collectors worldwide.
